An outsider’s look at Jāti/Varņa

Koenraad Elst LIVE with Madhu Kishwar

Koenraad Elst (born 7 August, 1959) is a Flemish author who has done pioneering work on Hindu history, including debunking the Aryan Invasion Theory and history of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya. Elst was the first person to write a well researched book on Ram Mandir, which played a major role in making Hindus aware of the forgotten history of the temple.

He studied at the KU Leuven, obtaining MA degrees in Sinology, Indology and Philosophy. After a research stay at Benares Hindu University, he did original fieldwork for a doctorate on Hindu nationalism, which he obtained magna cum laude in 1998.

Elst has also had to pay a heavy price in his academic career for supporting Hindu causes. But he is forthright in critiquing Hindu organizations for their lack of intellectual rigour and lack of clarity of purpose.

As an independent researcher he is one of the authoritative and respected voices who challenged the fake narratives peddled by leftists. His scholarly writings on Islam have inspired many young scholars. He was a close associate of historians Sita Ram Goel and Ram Swarup ji. Like them, he defies party loyalties and partisan agendas.
