श्रद्धांजलि प्रभु दयाल जी को || A Hero Neglected by Hindus, Sikhs and Govt

Ground report by Madhu Kishwar Discussant: Neeraj Atri

Topic Description: The 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, also known as the 1984 Sikh Massacre, was a series of organised pogroms against Sikhs in India following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Government estimates project that about 2,800 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and 3,350 nationwide, whilst independent sources estimate the number of deaths at about 8,000–17,000.

The worst massacres took place in Block 32 Trilokpuri, in which hundreds of Sikhs inhabiting single-room tenements were casually butchered over several days. Amidst this barbarity, a few Hindus saved Sikhs in 1984.

While protecting three women, Prabhu Dayal Ji, a Hindu employee of a Sikh-owned factory, caught fire himself and died. He is an unsung warrior in a true sense and this video is meant to pay homage to the memory of Shri Prabhu Dayal, who had died while trying to save three Sikh women from a burning house in Ashok Vihar during the anti-Sikh riots of November 1984.

Shri Prabhu Dayal was a resident of Baljit Nagar. On November 1, 1984, he was in his workplace when a big mob came to set the place on fire. Prabhu Dayal tried to dissuade them from setting the place on fire. However, the mob persisted. Everyone, including the chowkidars hired to guard the place, ran away on seeing the mob. But Prabhu Dayal stayed on and went to rescue three Sikh women who had been trapped on the first floor. He sustained serious injuries in the process. He died on November 8, 1984, as a result of those injuries.
