Write For Manushi

We invite you to submit contributions for possible publication on the new Manushi website at www.manushi.in. We judge the worth of each submission on merit and pay equal, if not special attention to hitherto unknown or less known authors. However, each submission is subject to review by our editorial board. 

We welcome writing that:

  • Addresses various social, political, cultural and civilizational challenges faced by India today in a fearless and non-partisan manner. 
  • Brings factual and insightful reports from different regions of the country, especially the less reached areas and communities, in order for us to understand the diversity in the life-situation and of the people of our country;
  • Promotes greater understanding of and respect for our diverse cultures and faith traditions,  
  • Counters the distortion of our past heritage, improve our understanding of our civilizational strengths and vulnerable spots;
  • Brings special focus on women’s role in the family, community and society at large through different phases of Indian history;
  • Explores ways to make our familial, cultural and social institutions respond creatively to the changing requirements of our people;
  • Presents important but neglected historical texts and literature together with introduction and analysis;
  • Deals with strategies to strengthen the citizenship rights of our people, ways to bridge the rural urban divide, and protect the vulnerable communities from assaults by hostile outsiders;
  • Discusses effective strategies to enhance the participation of citizens in public affairs and make governance more accountable;
  • Analyses government policies, laws and the functioning of various institutions related to education, healthcare, culture, heritage, agriculture, economy, police, judiciary;
  • Reviews the actual functioning of various laws claiming to strengthen women’s rights as well as rights of disadvantaged groups (SCs/STs) and understand in concrete detail the extent to which these laws have lived up to their stated intent, and what aspects lend themselves to easy abuse;
  • Strengthens our endeavours to work for a resurgent India built on the foundations of justice and equity rooted in the core Dharmic values of Indic civilization. 

Provides realistic, non-partisan accounts of:

  • Peoples’ struggles for basic survival needs and the right to quality education and health care;
  • How vested interests engineer inter community, inter caste conflicts, inter-faith conflicts in India;
  • Important administrative and social, political reform initiatives ongoing in India and its neighbouring countries, including an honest review of government initiated welfare programs;
  • Role of civil society organizations, including faith based organizations, caste and biradari panchayats in different parts of the country to understand the role they perform, the extent to which people owe allegiance to them, identify the positive leadership initiatives within these traditional institutions;
  • New advances in science and technology which have the potential to empower citizens, reduce the drudgery and vulnerability of the marginalized and impoverished groups;

Insightful profiles (not hagiographies) of those who are:

  • Notable change makers, social reformers and innovators;
  • Artists, litterateurs, film makers who have created a rich legacy;
  • Pioneering historians, sociologists, economists, scientists, environmentalists;
  • Outstanding administrators and politicians;
  • Ordinary individuals who have battled against heavy odds for justice and dignity.

We also welcome:

  • Short stories, folk tales, folk arts, poetry, folk songs that provide fresh insights into the values and aspirations of our people, especially women and marginalized groups;
