Dear Manushi friends,
We take great pleasure in inviting you to submit contributions for possible posting on the new interactive Manushi website at www.manushi.in that has been launched on January 1, 2010, the start of a new decade.
We welcome writing that:
- Brings fresh insights based on investigative research on important social, economic and political issues that help us accurately understand the life-situations of the people of our country, especially of women and vulnerable communities, so that our intellectual and activist interventions are well informed.
- Promotes greater understanding of and respect for our diverse cultures and religious traditions by undertaking inquiries that will counter the distortion of our past heritage, improve our understanding of our present and make our familial, cultural and social institutions respond creatively to the changing requirements of our people.
- Deals with strategies to strengthen the citizenship rights, human rights and civil liberties of our people, especially of those from vulnerable communities and those living in rural areas.
- Discusses effective strategies to enhance the participation of women and marginalized groups in politics and public affairs as well as bring special focus to women's rights while integrating them in all our work on social, political and economic reforms;
- Strengthen women’s rights in the family, especially property and land rights;
Provides realistic, non partisan accounts and analysis of:
- Peoples’ struggles for basic survival needs: clean and adequate water supply, fuel, fodder, sanitation and the right to quality education and health care;
- Engineered conflicts and consequent tensions in inter community relations in India;
- Strategies to strengthen the culture of peaceful co-living and effective power sharing between various communities;
- Important administrative and social, political reform initiatives ongoing in India and its neighbouring countries, including welfare programs like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Rural Health Mission, National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
- Role of civil society organizations, including faith based organizations, caste and biradari panchayats in different parts of the country to understand the role they perform, the extent to which people owe allegiance to them, identify the positive leadership initiatives within these traditional institutions;
- Reviews of the actual functioning of various laws enacted to protect citizens’ rights/women’s rights and understand in concrete detail the extent to which these laws have lived up to their stated intent, and what aspects lend themselves to easy abuse;
- New advances in science and technology which have the potential to empower citizens, reduce the drudgery and vulnerability of the marginalized and impoverished groups;
Insightful profiles (not hagiographies), especially of women, who are:
- Notable change makers, social reformers and innovators;
- Artists, litterateurs, film makers;
- Historians, sociologists, economists, scientists, environmentalists;
- Outstanding administrators and politicians;
- Ordinary individuals who have battled against heavy odds for justice and dignity.
We also welcome:
- Short stories, folk tales, folk arts, poetry, folk songs that provide fresh insights into the values and aspirations of our people, especially women and marginalized groups;
- Presentation of important but neglected historical texts and literature together with introduction and analysis
